Some Wedding Invitation Basics

Wedding invitations are one of the most time consuming factors of a wedding.  First a guest list has to be decided, and then the pattern of stationery must be selected.  Next each invitation must be written, addressed, and mailed.  Finally all the R.S.V.P’s must be sorted so a final guest list can be compiled.

The guest list can be decidedly hard to make because most people want to share their special day with everyone they know.  A large guest list can really eat up a wedding budget and can make the entire ceremony feel less personal. Once a wedding list has been decided upon, choosing the wedding invitation is the next task.  Some people choose to choose a font style and color that coordinates with the wedding theme or colors.  It is common to choose good quality card stock in a shade between true white and ivory.

Some wedding invitation companies offer borders or pictures on their invitations.  If a picture of the bride and groom can be selected, that can add a beautiful and personal touch to the wedding invitation.

Also ‘Save the Date’ magnets and stickers are becoming more common accompaniments to wedding invitation.  These are adorable and are an effective way to help guests remember the details of an upcoming wedding.  These stickers and magnets are a nice way to let the bridal party know about fittings and special gatherings such as bachelor or bachelorette parties.

Réspondez S’il Vous Plait

R.S.V.P is the abbreviation for the French “réspondez s’il vous plait” which translates to please respond.  When this is printed on a wedding invitation people should know they are expected to respond by the given date.  For some people it may be easier if they can R.S.V.P by phone or e-mail.

Many wedding planning websites allow guests to respond to their wedding invitation by e-mail instead of traditional mail. However, a regular e-mail address included on the R.S.V.P card with the bride or groom’s e-mail address would also be sufficient.

When making the final guest list it is a good idea to account for extra people regardless of the wedding invitation responses.  This is because many people have their own ideas about what R.S.V.P means.  Some people believe they should only respond if they intent on attending.  Other people believe they should only respond if they are not intending to attend the wedding.
